The village of Saint Jean d'Aulps

Central to the Vallée d'Aulps, the village of Saint Jean d’Aulps has inherited its name from the old French word for "alpage", meaning high mountain pasture.
The monks who lived in the Abbey believe Saint Jean d'Aulps lays claim to be the ancestor of the surrounding villages in the Vallée d'Aulps.

Summer

The area is a haven for cyclists both for road and mountain biking with many of the big climbs rode in the Tour De France near by and the tracks and trails Of the Portes Du soliel ski area for the mountain bikers. It is an ideal way to take in the breathtaking views of the mountains for those more energetic.
Hikers and climbers can find beautiful summits and combs: the Graydon comb, the Roc de Tavaneuse and its lake, the Pic de la Corne and many more. There are also a number of outdoor pursuits available, including white water rafting nearby. Of course, there’s also plenty of relaxing to be done in this peaceful haven too.

Ski/Board

Saint Jean d'Aulps has also become an important winter sports resort supporting steady growth every year. It offers many natural advantages for skiers and snowboarders, including the famous Roc d'Enfer circuit (also popular with visitors in the summer). The ski resort has an excellent snow record, and is an integral part of the Portes du Soleil one of the largest in europe. The village has its own slopes and is very close to the areas of Morzine and Avoriaz.
